Startup Manager will help you manage the loading of extensions, control panels, Chooser documents, and other startup items from one convenient location.
• Extension management
Trouble-shooting extension conflicts can be very time-consuming and confusing. Startup Manager greatly reduces the time you spend dealing with conflicts by displaying all of your extensions and control panels in a single window. With Startup Manager you can quickly turn these items on or off and change their loading order.
• Managing crashing extensions
If you do experience a system crash that is related to an extension, Startup Manager will automatically turn that extension off and report this to you the next time you restart. This will save you time spent trying to pinpoint the problem through trial and error.
Here’s How!
• Using Startup Manager at startup
If you wish to configure your extensions, you can do so at startup.
1) Restart your machine. (Note that the demo version of Now Utilities brings up Startup Manager automatically. In the standard version you must hold down the space bar as you start your machine to bring up Startup Manager.)
2) Now you can double-click on an extension to turn it on or off (this also works with startup items such as applications or control panels).
3) Click on an extension and drag to change loading order.
4) To change your startup disk, simply click on the pop-up menu and choose a different startup disk.
Now you are ready to load only the extensions you need!
• Creating sets of extensions
Startup Manager will allow you to create specific sets of extensions to run special applications, games, or for co-workers if more than one person uses a machine. This feature is particularly useful for Powerbook users who may use a different set of tools in the office than when at home or on the road.
1) Open the Startup Manager control panel and click on the “Sets…” button.
2) Select “New…”, name your set “Home”, and click “OK”.
3) Double-click on each extension you wish to add or remove from your new set and click and drag to set the loading order.
Now at startup, or before you shutdown, you can easily change which set you wish to load to support your environment or the application you’re working with.
